Yeah, that’s right, I said, "Take a hike!" No, wait, don’t go!!! I don’t mean it that way. I mean, seriously, Take a Hike! Aw, c’mon when’s the last time you got out and enjoyed the Great Outdoors??? Me? I get kinda stir crazy if I go too long with out a trip to the mountains somewhere, but I’m getting ahead of myself...yeah, gotta get all the perfunctory Rules and Disclaimers yadda yadda yadda out of the way first:

Interfaith Prayer Vigil in DC for Immigrant Families

With rhetoric continuing to heat up in the immmigration debate, with ICE raids having a devastating impact on communities and families, with the Administration completely abandoning "family values" in its latest immigration proposal(PDF), and with the Senate expected to begin debate on immigration legislation next week...the Interfaith Immigration Coalition is calling on all people of a faith and all those who truly value families to join in a Interfaith Prayer Vigil for Immigrant Families on Mother's Day, May 13th from 7-8pm in DC at Lafeyette Park behind the White House.

There have already been a few diaries (two
good ones from SharoninMD) and a
front page story
about the mess that was Primary Day in Maryland, particularly in Montgomery County. Since I served as an Assistant Chief Election Judge (in charge of provisional balloting and filling in for other positions when needed), I just wanted to share some of my experience of all that happened and perhaps a few reflections to throw another perspective into the ring.
Do note, though, that I'm typing this on a grand total of 10 hours of sleep over the past two nights, so you'll forgive me if I'm not completely coherent, right? Oh, and I don't have the energy for the fancy HTML either, so it's plain....deal with it! :-)

A Fight We Can Win

Update [2006-1-31 15:40:5 by reahti]:: This should have been in the original posts, but...sources tell me that grassroots action has already gotten 2 Rs (Simmons-CT and Schwarz-MI) to promise to change their votes - we can win!
I know we are all exhausted and disillusioned and outraged and...(fill in the blank)...over the Alito nomination. And, I know the budget is never a really sexy issue to talk about.
BUT, there's a fight in the House tomorrow morning that we can win and in doing so send a strong message that, however the President tries to spin it tonight, his priorities are NOT the priorities of the American people.
Stay with me folks - the Dems are united on this one and we only need roughly 4-5 more R votes to kill this. Grassroots activism has kept this battle alive - we just need one more push for tomorrow to give a nice slap in the face to the Republican mockery of "fiscal discipline"..

Your phone calls are needed NOW to put an end to a nefarious budget cutting bill negotiated behind close doors in the wee hours of the weekend. The bill is so bad that the House had to hold the vote before dawn today and threaten to keep Congress in session through Christmas in order to squeak it through (212-206).
Now it's the Senate's turn and the vote will turn on a few key Senators: Coleman (R-MN), Specter (R-PA), Nelson (D-NE), DeWine (R-OH), Landrieu (D-LA) and possibly a few other "moderate" Republicans like Snowe (ME), Collins (ME), Chafee, and Voinovich (OH).
If you live in Ohio, Nebraska, Minnesota, or Pennsylvania it is critical that you call now - 1-800-828-0498 or 1-800-426-8073, ask for your Senator's office, and tell them to stop this shameful budget!

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the House leadership is crumbling. After last week's
little delay of the "Moral Disaster of Monumental Proportions" (well, come to think of it, that occurs every day these Rs are in leadership, but I'm referring specifically to the bill to cut entitlement programs like Food Stamps and Medicaid), now they're having trouble passing the annual spending bills b/c of the draconian cuts to social services. More below the fold...

Democrats and other House officials said they had been informed that the budget vote that had been promised repeatedly by the leadership would be postponed. The turmoil was the latest sign of Republican dissension and represented a
major embarrassment for the Republican leadership, particularly Roy Blunt of Missouri, who is serving as temporary majority leader and would like the job on a full-time basis if legal troubles persist for Representative Tom DeLay.
The leadership problems with moderates were not only in the House. In the Senate, resistance by
Republican centrists there snagged an emerging tax cut plan.

Alrighty folks - I'm a newbie, so be kind - and realize that I don't have a clue to do all the boxes, pics, etc....but here goes....though I might regret it
One mother's protests, the remembrance of the events that ended another war sixty years ago, and ongoing justifications for our present quagmire have left me thinking a lot about war and honor and freedom and patriotism and what it truly means to love one's country and the value of service.
